is it all about mastery, again?

We appropriate Susan Sontag's famous formulation of anti-criticism to describe the hunger for pure painting in a world of young self-regarding, hypereducated artistes who splice and dice their personal backstories and trivial learning into evermore insignificant creations.

If you are interested in painting, read what Charlie Finch has to say about painting in Artnet Magazine "Against Interpretation". His previous article about bad painting and the fascination with young artists has given way to this piece: he is looking for the (painting) antidote to bad painting.

There have been a few articles in the NYTimes, Artnet and Artforum about the obsession with young (young) artists. It seems that the critics are trying to force a backlash against this trend for better or for worse. What do you think? For better or for worse? Personally, I like older/mid-career and youth mixed together. It seems to mean so much more to let them bump into each other a bit. And I hate trends -- they produce such a fine lot of crap and anxiety.

New Scientific Research

According to the LA Times, this is what King Tut looked like. Cute, right? I always thought that the black stuff around Egyptian eyes was makeup! Silly me.

"The efforts show that the science and techniques of forensic reconstruction can be a useful tool for reconstructing the likenesses of people who lived long ago" said Zahi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

and.."In my opinion, as a scholar, the Egyptian reconstruction looks the most Egyptian, and the French and American versions have more unique personalities," Hawass said.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, just BUY YOUR TICKETS NOW to see King Tut at LACMA, and don't forget to peek in at the Tim Hawkinson show while you are there!

ps I heard a rumor you can read the LA Times Calendar on line for free again...

Wouldn't It Be Great If...

Check out this article from Artforum May 5: Senate Forms Bipartisan Cultural Caucus !! "Americans for the Arts has distributed an "arts action alert" email urging arts advocates nationwide to "recruit your senator's official membership in this bipartisan caucus.... Our goal is to recruit at least 40 senators to join the caucus by the end of the year." (let's recruit our senators!)

It might be interesting to talk about what you would like to see the NEA do with more money. Any imperatives?

Decline and Fall of Painting

finch4-27-4s.jpg Tim Gardner Family Portrait (this is a bad painting)

Check out the article on art netabout bad painting (but not trying to be bad) by the Art World's own Oscar the Grouch: Charlie Finch. Love Oscar, love Charlie?

How refreshing to see a few shows getting slammed for being glib and derivative--and doing it badly. It would have been more compelling, however, to at least mention some work he found interesting by way of contrast. I especially enjoyed Finch's Gollum-esque turn in which he referred to himself as "we". That said, there is nothing quite like a swig from a bottle of vitriol now and again...

Asher at the Getty

Sadly, there were no winners in our "find Michael Asher" contest. He was in the lower left corner.
