If you can stand the heat...
...there is Chalk and talk to be had in Pasadena this afternoon.

Ed, man, where did you go!?

This was Kent Twitchell’s "Ed Ruscha Monument". Now it’s just a blank wall.
He worked on it for nine years and now. It’s. Just. Gone. I was pretty shocked to read about this last week. I loved that mural! But then again I also dig the ones they do a few blocks away to promote the X Games. I don’t know, I guess that’s not really in the same category, but I do like seeing more than just glass and steel when I’m downtown…
Read about it in the Read about it in the LAT
and in the bloggosphere

Chocolate Oscars

Jason has an interesting chat going on at Negro Please re: 3 6 Mafia winning an Oscar on Sunday night. Having not seen the telecast I feel a bit removed, but it certainly sparked some strong feeling from a lot of folks.

WOW!

To quote from cinematical:
HOLY CRAP! Can I say that again? HOLY CRAP! Crash has just won best Picture.
I totally didn't expect that. Good movie, great performances but "Best Picture"? Really?! I totally thought the cowboy love story was going to sweep... Good thing I'm not a betting cat.
Truth be told, I'm not a big Oscar person, unless there is a big party goin' and the drinks are flowin' I'm not really that into it. I love watching movies and I like talking movies. But awards shows...not so much. They are simply too LOOOOOOONG. And having grown up on the east coast where you're held hostage in front of the tv till all hours of the night... Ugh!
But I always check in to see who won :)

But two days later it’s beautiful!

Reason #249 for moving back to Cali?

It’s the SUN, stupid!

Today in LA ...
... Very, Very Wet.

I kept thinking about Todd Hido's rainy images on the ride home - even though my commute is much less picturesque.

Hollywood gets a facelift ...
Well, not all of Hollywood, just the sign. I meant to post this last week but got caught up with actual work.
Next time maybe they will take a page from Ed's book and re-do the sign in chocolate:

Day of the Dead

José Guadalupe Posada, The calavera of the fashionable lady (La calavera catrina), 1913, broadside, relief etching on zinc.
So it's Day of the Dead. I am feeling pensive but I'm trying to remember it's a celebration and it's "about how we honor and remember the dead". I also read some interesting stuff here and here - wish I could make it over to Self Help Graphics but it's a little out of my way.
On a related note - I love, love, love Posada. I saw a neat show of prints and broadsides in San Diego last year. Today I was kinda wishin' I had gotten the catalog. This show traveled to Central Washington University this past spring.

ACE GALLERY

I didn't know that there were gallery receptions on Sunday night, but I guess Ace (on Wilshire) is a special like that.
Kenneth Feingold and Tim Hawkinson are on view. To be honest, all the artificial intelligence, old dolls and talking dummy heads kind of creeped me out a little. The best one (IMHO) was the disembodied couple arguing in bed but still, it was kind of, you know ... strange. It's not really my thing. I'm actually really looking forward to seeing more photo in NYC later this week, but if you are in LA go to ACE and see the (smaller?) Hawkinson installation. I liked the bagpipe and the sweet tweet bronze girl looked, well, sweet.

Kitty comes home
I've been back for a couple of days but am just now feeling back to normal (i.e. I am doing things at the appropriate time of day and I'm not exhausted anymore). It was a good trip - productive, fun and with some nice surprises - but I'm totally glad to be back! It's just too damn hot back there and I pretty much OD-ed on art and cuisines of the world, so it was time, finally, to come home.
Believe it or not, I really missed the blog. So I will try to post a bit more in the next few days and visit some of my cyber home slices:
carlagirl
farmist
buttergun
insurgent muse
musing the mystery
Hope everyone is doing well and full on enjoying the summer!
