Toast Post

Elium's excellent design let's a kitty keep an eye on her toast!
Now I’ve seen a lot of toasters in my day, but this may be the coolest one around. I first saw it (and meant to do a post on it) about a month ago while flipping through Dwell at the local Barnes and Noble. But the summer has just been so busy and my “to do" list (which includes notes to myself like: POST ON YOUR STUPID BLOG ALREADY!) got buried under all manner of books, files and random junk. I have now spent the last two nights cleaning up my room and “Feng Shui-ing it up”, as my cuz likes to say. The room is now clean, the summer is winding down and I promise that more posts are on their way.
Note: while searching for a good snap of this futuristic toaster, I discovered a blogger that is even more into the transparent house wares than I am …That l.e.d. table looks amazing!

Some days you just need comfort food

For some reason today I had a wild craving for a burger and a shake. I really wanted In and Out but was too far away. The closest thing I could come up with was Swingers. The burger was a little pricy for what you got but the shake was AMAZING! Totally hit the spot. I may have even sighed as I finished the last sip. It was perfect. Exactly what I needed when I needed it, and how often does THAT happen? It's the little things that count. I think that shake actually saved me from killing someone on the ride home...

Some food from this week

A good friend of mine from NYC gave me this fab tea for Christmas. You just drop this tightly packed herb-ball-thing into your teapot and it unfurls into this lovely shape... About a year ago I had read about a tea that turns into a flower in your teapot (see below). My friend H said she had had that tea with her mom last time she was home (in Japan). She said she’d find it for me in NYC - cuz you know, they have everything :) Well, not quite. She couldn't find it for me but it was sweet of her to try. She sent me Celestial Peach Ball (Green Tea), purchased and gift wrapped at Takashimaya. The whole package was a work of art!
Thanks so much H! I love the delicate taste and the whole experience of preparing it.

Apparently you can purchase this tea at McNally Robinson bookstore in Nolita. But it’s a dine in only kinda deal.

Post Turkey Treats

The chocolate chip coffee cake was a total success! My cuz supervised and her boyfriend and I managed to divide up the tasks and bake this lovely treat together. It came out of the oven at 7pm and the 3 of us literally stared at it cooling on the rack for, like an eternity (or maybe just an hour), before B was overcome with sweet tooth rage cut the first piece.
The Verdict: We need to make one of these Every weekend.

Come to America! We have toast!

My cuz and I have a long tradition of “Bad Movie Time Killers” - you know, crappy movies you are practically forced to go see in order to A) wait for traffic to die down. B) get out of the house to avoid your parents boring house guests or C) placate my cuz because THIS TIME she heard that the movie in question was really good and "wasn’t I right when I dragged you to see Splash, Running Scared and Beverly Hills Cop and you laughed your head off during all three, so shut up and get your coat !". Yeah, THOSE movies.
Well, yesterday we were firmly engaged in a) waiting for the sea of red taillights to die down on the 405 and the winner was….. FLIGHTPLAN!
This movie was almost completely forgettable except for three lines at the very beginning. Jodie is trying to ease her daughter’s fears and get her excited about moving to The States:
Julia (cute little daughter): What kind of food is there?
Kyle (Jodie): In America? The best. They have everything.
Julia: Even toast?
Yes, Julia, even toast. And thank God for THAT!

Toast Stories

This is a story about toast. If you’re on Atkins, please go no further...
The simple pleasure of toast is hard to beat. Toast (with butter and lemon curd) and a cup of coffee are pretty much THE BEST THING EVER and my preferred breakfast! Inexpensive and easy to prepare - even if you're hung over - this is an unbeatable combo. Plus, in these uncertain times when money troubles, career wows and life issues loom large, I try to remember the few things that I can control and the things I truly enjoy. Perfect toast is something I can count on.
It's taken years for me to perfect my version and believe me when I say, there are as many varieties of toast-lovers as there are stars in the sky! After much trial and error, I have discovered that it's best to use real butter and real bread - no margarine or low carb, blah, blah, blah. Also, Sourdough bread, the sourer-er the better-er makes all the difference in the world.
I don’t know why I decided to mess with the combo this week – I mean isn’t there enough uncertainty in my life right now?! I should have just left it alone. But just yesterday I tried a little experiment with the bread. I switched from Sarah Lee to Francisco International. BIG MISTAKE. I was taken in by marketing. The label of Francisco International Sliced Sourdough sports a cute little drawing a baker pulling out a perfectly brown loaf of bread from a brick oven. It had me salivating in the store but crying in my kitchen. How could I be so easily duped! UGH! This bread is too airy, not really sour at all and the slices are thin, too thin. It toasts up like a freakn' cracker. Not satisfying and very crumbly. It put me off for the rest of the morning. Meh.
So today I’m back to the classic trinity – Sarah Lee Sourdough, Land o Lakes butter and Lemoney curd goodness! Simple pleasures. Now, I just have to convince my cousin and her boyfriend to eat this Francisco stuff on sandwiches before it goes bad….

Let's Talk Pie!

While enjoying a most excellent cream tea at Tudor House this afternoon, I happened to spot this in LA Citybeat:
"You might think glitzy, glammy Beverly Hills would be the last place to get a piece of old-fashioned, goo-filled, high-calorie crust pie, but you’d be wrong. Especially this Sunday, when the city holds its 10th annual pie-loving fiesta, now appropriately called “Piesta.”"
I swear, they actually call it a Piesta! Can you believe it? An event tailor made for Kitty (and Lisa) IF she can manage to drag herself out of bed and over to the Hills of Beverly before 1pm!
“Piesta” Beverly Hills Farmers Market in the 9300 block of Civic Center Dr., Beverly Hills. Sun. 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Free. $3 per slice, $5 for two (That's a DEAL). For info: 310.550.4796/Beverlyhills.org.
Maersk!

Bubble Tea
Over the weekend I gave myself a treat . I went to my favorite Lollicup and had a cool refreshing Boba Tea. Boba Tea - or Bubble Tea as EM likes to call it - is cold milk tea with a generous helping of tapioca pearls at the bottom. It might sound odd if you've never tried it, but it's really tasty and the pearls are fun to eat.
The tea is served in a plastic cup sealed with a clear cellophane cover emblazoned with a smiling sunflower:
It's quite a cheerful drink. Part of the fun of ordering it is grabbing an oversized straw from the counter and punching it through the cellophane seal, although I always try not to punch out the face of the flower!
It's a bit too cold for a Bubble Tea tonight but maybe tomorrow....
